Heartworm & Natural Dewormers

Heartworm is a parasite called dirofilaria immitis.

  • Parasites increase in the body when there are heavy metals in the bloodstream. They act as biological cleanup system to protect the host from organ toxicity. See 'Explore' > 'Toxicants' > 'Heavy Metals' This system is also related to biofilm.

  • The standard synthetic "treatment" includes (Immiticide/Melarsomine), an arsenic-based compound. Meaning, the standard "cure" for heartworm actually adds more heavy metals into the body. What the treatment looks like:

    • Doxycycline (10 mg/kg) for 28 days — to kill Wolbachia bacteria inside the worms

    • Macrocyclic lactone (heartworm preventive) starting day 1

    • Three injections of melarsomine (2.5 mg/kg IM) — the AHS recommends the 3-dose protocol for ALL dogs (99% efficacy), not just severe cases

    • Prednisone* taper injections

      • *Glucocorticosteroids including prednisone cause Iatrogenic Cushing's by flooding the body with cortisol-like hormones at very high levels, shutting down pituitary signal, causing adrenal glands to atrophy while the dog's body experiences all the effects of excess cortisol — pot belly, hair loss, thin skin, muscle wasting, high blood sugar, and frequent urination. Adrenal recovery can take months if not years after stopping and immediate withdrawal can cause life-threatening adrenal crisis.

    • Diroban (melarsomine, Zoetis/Anzac) was FDA-approved in June 2026 as the first generic alternative to Immiticide, addressing long-term shortage issues.

    • A non-arsenic alternative (moxidectin + doxycycline "Moxi-Doxy" protocol 😡) is listed in the Merck Vet Manual as an option if melarsomine is unavailable or contraindicated, but is not the standard and takes much longer (up to 2+ years) with a higher risk of lung disease progression.

Natural Heartworm Cure

  • AHVMA Journal in 2015, concluded that daily low dose black walnut and wormwood was 100% effective in preventing heartworm infection in all 20 dogs tested with no adverse side effects reported.

    • A natural heartworm cure , known about since 2015.

  • Wormwood powder is effective against parasites. Animals are able to select how much they need and for how long, when offered. It is usually mixed with rice bran oil. Please consult an Animal Self-Medication practitioner.
